Hanover High March Intensive Course

We are back for 2011!   The original crew, with some NEW additions, are coming together again to bring you an amazing opportunity to construct your own ride!

Just like last year this course is designed to bring together Hanover High students with a common interest in exploring the design, product and lifestyle of longboarding in a hands-on workshop. Participants will design and handcraft a longboard around the goal of replacing as many environmentally harmful materials as possible, with functional, ecologically based alternatives using wood from local New England forest.   We have tricked out the course for this year with some new additions.  First, and this is HUGE, we will be using Surf-Rodz INDeesz trucks (INDeeSZ), bushings and bearings on all of our boards.  Second, BOHO boards will be working with us to create glue-ups that we will cut our board designs from.  Third, everyone will have a chance to design their own silk screen graphic for their board.  Things that are NOT changing: everyone will receive a helmet from the "Helmet-in-Hands" program, a years subscription to Concrete Wave and the famous schwag box with stickers and original course t-shirt.

Course Dates: March 22-25th, 2011

**Course is only open to Hanover High Students

I will be dropping more information about the course and what to expect in the coming months here and on the course web site

Concrete Wave Goes 100% Longboarding

Just wanted to share this interesting letter from Michael Brooke...

What goes around, comes around, eh? The genesis of Concrete Wave mag was another, “Int’l Longboarder”. It had a good run before it evolved into Concrete Wave in order to serve and cover “all of skateboarding”. Well, Papa Darwin and Skategeezer have conferred yet again, and here’s news about our beloved ‘wave, fresh from publisher, Michael Brooke…

Concrete Wave goes Longboard!

Toronto. Over the past several months, I have had a number of conversations with readers, advertisers, supporters and yes, even former readers. It has become increasingly clear to me that it is time to pour nitroglycerin on the fires that are burning out there within the world of longboarding. Things are burning brightly and now is the time to focus that intensity.

Adrenalina Longboard Skateboard Marathon – 26.2 Mile Push Race

November 6, 2010 is the Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon of Hallandale Beach, Florida. The first $10,000 prize skateboard race in the history that I am aware of. The race will crown the fastest Push Culture skateboarder to date. No other race has fronted such a cash prize and the competition roster is deep with longskaters famous for top finshes at push races around the world. The Marathon skateboard record is owned by a dude named Matt Elver from the UK. Dude. Another top competitor is Paul Kent who is notorious for awesome long trek skates around North and South America and beyond. These dudes are the most hyped competitors going into the marathon event. Elver and Kent are known for Ultra Skate accomplishments, cross country skate travel and are well respected by industry push culture skate leaders. Hats off to both Matt and Paul for their skate accomplishments.

Skate Australia trailer NEW

The Skate Australia documentary has taken a long and hard journey, with blood, sweat and tears shed. Anthony Fricker who was the tremendously passionate director of Skate Australia, died on the 2 nd of August 2009 in a downhill skateboarding accident while filming for his documentary.

The Swedish twin brothers Jonatan & Sebastian Lundmark from Dampling Productions, had been working closely with Anthony Fricker during the project. So three weeks after Anthony’s funeral they took over the entire production and dedicated a whole year to finishing Skate Australia for their beloved and greatly missed friend.

Montreal Longboarding Endurance Race

The third longboard endurance race (push race) in Montréal will take place September 25th 2010. This event is about touring the city of Montreal by joining each checkpoints setup at various strategic places. The suggested preliminary path (about 20 km long) emphasizes the use of bicycle lanes for safety reason and is accessible to all levels. Helmets are mandatory. The proposed route takes about 1 hour to complete and will not be revealed until a week before the event.
The event will take place on Saturday, September 25th or Sunday, September 27th in case of extreme conditions on Saturday. The riders are expected at the subway station Université de Montréal at 9:00 am. The specifications of the final details of the race and final registration (payment, discharge, allocating numbers …) will take place at this time. The race is scheduled to start at 10:00 PRECISE. If desired, a vehicle will be available to move any personal belonging directly at the finish line. A BBQ will be welcoming the riders at the finish line (included in price).
The entry fee will be $ 10 and ALL the money will be redistributed among the tree fastest riders. The prices offered by sponsors will be given to the podium but also drawn at random from the riders and volunteers to give everyone a chance to leave with something else than pleasure!
I am at your disposal for any request for additional information. You can contact me via email yann.lhermitte@gmail.com or reach me on my cell phone at 514-574-5173.
Thank you in advance,
Yann Lhermitte

Central MA Freeride, DH, flatland & Slide Jam Competition !

Update***Date change to the 21st for the MA event.

Central MA is full of skilled skaters and sick hills, so I've decided to organize a skate event! Come join lots of other skaters on a closed road in Harvard, MA (specific location forthcoming) to thrown down some crazy slides, compete for prizes, or just cruise around and spectate.

NEW DATE: Saturday, 8/15/10
TIME: 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM + "after-skate" sesh

There will be a freeride "best trick" competition, a "longest slide" competition, other fun stuff, a general freeride period and potentially a DH race.

PRIZES have graciously been put forth by a number of sponsors looking to spread the Beast Coast stoke. From decks to slide pucks, there's some serious stuff to win, so bring your skills!

ROAD CLOSED by police detail

ENTRY FEE is $10 if you plan to skate in the prize-winning events; this helps cover the cost of safety materials like haybales, water/food, and a police detail (and potentially a cash prize, depending on the number of entries)

PROTECTIVE GEAR must be worn by competitors ! ! ! This is important.

EVERYONE is invited, from the sponsored pro to the interested spectator .

IF YOU PLAN ON COMPETING / RACING, PLEASE RSVP to emgeemann@gmail.com with the subject line "skate event RSVP"

Remember to bring your smiling faces, some water, and if you want, a camera! High-quality video footage and photos will be taken throughout the event, but the more snaps the merrier.

AFTER-EVENT:
The Harvard locals would be happy to show anyone that's interested the smorgasboard of delicious hills and fun spots that this town has to offer. For a sampling to whet the palette, check the following:

(^ the latter two include a lot of footage from the most likely race and freeride hill)

Warrior Race 2010

WARRIORS RACE 2010 WILL HAPPEN RAIN OR SHINE!!!!!
START: 7PM @ VAN CORTLAND PARK, BX
Hey all you skate boppers, The Warriors Race is TOMORROW, are you ready?  The 26 mile skate will test you mentally and physically.  Expect a high temperature of 87f and a low of 77f during the race with a chance of thunderstorms.  The sunset will happen at 8:21pm, be ready for a dark skate!  How long do you expect the race to last?  Does anyone have a guess of the top finishing time?  LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW.  Adam and Jesse Garbacz will be at the finishline for winning verification. (Finish - Surf Ave/10th st, across from the Cyclone Roller Coaster).  The Warriors Race is your chance to show NYC how fast we really can skate.  Some believe we are foolish to skate 26 miles in this heat, I say drink water!  Some don’t think they can manage the distance, we say GO HARD OR GO HOME.  The Warriors Race is not for everyone and not everyone has signed up.  The clock is ticking and 4:20pm on 7/23 is the final deadline for race entry.  DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?  DO YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF NEW YORK CITY HISTORY?  The choice is yours.
The rules are simple.
1. DON’T BE LATE!  Tell your boss your busy and get to Bustin by 4pm.  We will have the entire Lizzies team here getting everyone dressed for the event with rags we have around here for the video.   If a lady at the shop asks you to wear body paint/makeup DO ITTT!!!  The Warriors Video is going to be epic, dress the part!
2. DRESS THE PART!  You all selected your teams and have ZERO excuse of, “I didn’t know I had to dress up”  or  “I didn’t know how to get ahold of my teammates”.  Trust me, if you dress wacko you will look good.  Go nuts!!!
3.  NO RULES!  Other than the checkpoints in your race pack you will receive at the start there are no rules EXCEPT - NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!!!!  no busses, trains, cabs, or airplanes.  SKATE!  or bike if you are with at least 2 skaters.  Race starts at Van Cortland Park, BX and finishes at Coney Island in front of the Cyclone ride at Surf Ave and 10th st.  EASY!
DRINK WATER - GET REST - BRING A TEAM VIDEO/STILL CAMERA - SEE YOU AT 4PM @ BUSTIN OR 6PM @ VAN CORTLAND PARK.  NYC MTA 1 TRAIN TO VAN CORTLAND PARK, END OF THE LINE.  READ PREVIOUS POST FOR MORE DETAILS!!!

What is Push Culture?

Let Matt Colvin from Bustin Boards, one of the first people to coin this term, explain...

"Push Culture is the lifestyle associated with the boards here, and the harder you push the board, the more it pushes you.”
Though shortboarding is what most people think of when discussing skateboarding in general, longboarding is slightly different—the deck is much longer, the geometry varied and the wheels, bearings and other necessary accoutrements suited for more intense exposure to urban terrain—and embodies its own set of skills, techniques and values, which Bustin aims to bring to the forefront of the skate scene.
“Longboarding is more of a laid back style of riding,” Colvin continued. “I think it’s about flair, each rider’s personal flow and vibe, and about embracing others, while short-boarding lends itself to a more competitive feel. Bustin’s impact on push culture is associating our name with the lifestyle we’re all already living. We ARE push culture, we live and inspire it in others.”

A big thanks ...

A big thanks to all who have made this March Intensive possible. Without your support, this workshop would not have been possible.

The Longboard Collective would like to give thanks especially to Wayne from surf_rodz and Andrew from Green Street Longboards for the knowledge they provided, their time, and patience with us amateurs. This has been a great experience for all of us - we are happy that we reached our goal that every student walks out with a board they have made in four intensive days.

We would also like to thank our school for making room for boarders' needs for one day and blocking off parts of the parking lot so that our students could test and ride (or shred, as I've learned) on their new longboards. I also like to thank the community for their understanding and tolerance ... and as for myself: I haven't ridden a board before, tried it today and had lots of fun - now, I do understand how much fun it is ... you should try it, too.

For the weekend ahead, I have tons of pictures and video footage to look through, but I have secured the right snack to go with it ...
Herr GH
